BIRTHS | MARRIAGE | DEATH

 

BIRTH REGISTRY

In order to register a birth abroad, you must present a Certified Birth Certificate from the State Vital Record where birth occurred. Original and two photocopies the following documents:

If both parents are Guatemalan citizens :

        • Valid passports or Cédulas de Vecindad
        • Birth Certificate (Issued 6 month or earlier)

If one of the parents is NOT a Guatemalan citizen :

        • Valid passport

If one of the parents is US citizen by Naturalization :

        • Valid US Passport
        •
Certificate of Naturalization
        • Birth Certificate from country of origin

If one of the parents was married before :

        • Divorce Decree.
        • If divorced in Guatemala: Divorce Decree registered in Guatemala.

MARRIAGE REGISTRY

If you are a Guatemalan citizen living abroad and got married, it is you duty and sole responsibility to register your marriage before the nearest Guatemalan Consular Office.

In order to register your marriage, you must present a Certified copy of the Marriage Certificate issued by the County Court of the State you got married and the following documents in original and two photocopies of each:

If both bride and groom are Guatemalan citizens :

        • Valid passports or Cédulas de Vecindad
        • Birth Certificate (Issued 6 month or earlier)

If one of the couple IS NOT a  Guatemalan citizen:

• Valid Passport (From country of origin)
• Birth Certificate

If one of the applicants is Naturalized US Citizen :

• US valid passport
• Certificate of US Naturalization
• Birth Certificate (From country of origin)

If one or both applicants was married before, must present the described documents above and the following:

• Divorce Decree from the corresponding county court.

• If divorced in Guatemala: Divorce Decree registered in Guatemala.

DEATH REGISTRY



For the corresponding legal proceedings, in case of a deceased Guatemalan citizen abroad, the death must be registered at the nearest Consulate or Embassy of Guatemala where death occurred. The Consulate or Embassy then, will notify it to the Vital Records in Guatemala city. 

To register a death, the following is required:

Death Record - issued by the State where death occurred. The death certificate must include the following data: Name and Surname, Nationality, Birth date, sex, occupation and address. Also the following information regarding the occurred: Place and date of death, cause and name of Doctor who declared the death, ID of deceased such a Cédula de Vecindad or Passport and a Birth Certificate which is mandatory.

Declaring Relative Identification Document

Cédula de Vecindad or valid passport, kinship to deceased, original and two photocopies of the mentioned documents.


 

NOTICE:

For all processes specified above, the applicant or relative must go to the Vital Registry office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Guatemala city, presenting the documents given by the Consulate of Embassy where the process was made. The Vital Registry office will provide a document which will be required in the Vital Record office in Guatemala city to issue the Birth, Marriage or Death Certificate.
